lengvoji atletika statusas T sritis Kūno kultūra ir sportas apibrėžtis Integrali sporto šaka, apimanti ciklinių ir aciklinių pratimų rungtis. Ją sudaro sportinis ėjimas, bėgimas, šuoliai, metimai ir daugiakovė. Yra daugiau negu 60 lengvosios atletikos rungčių. Pirmosios lengvosios atletikos varžybos minimos 776 m. pr. Kr. graikų sporto žaidynių užrašuose. Į šiuolaikinių olimpinių žaidynių programą lengvoji atletika įtraukta 1896 m. Europos čempionatai rengiami nuo 1934 m., Pasaulio taurės varžybos – nuo 1977 m., pasaulio čempionatai – nuo 1983 m. Lietuvoje pradėta kultivuoti 1919 m. atitikmenys: angl. track and field; track and field athletics vok. Leichtathletik, f rus. легкая атлетика
